糸物語

　私の作品は糸とアクリル絵具と木片から出来ています。作品制作に糸を使いはじめたのは数年前からですが、以前から私は織物の美しさに魅かれていたので、これは自然の成り行きかもしれません。数年前、友人のロズが色とりどりの糸をプレゼントしてくれました。私は艶やかな糸の美しさにすっかり魅了されましたが、さらにこれら糸にはある歴史がありました。

　ロズはアーティストで、現在アリゾナ州ツーソンに住んでいます。彼女の父親はハンガリーからの移民で、二十世紀初頭にアメリカにやってきました。ニューヨークで製糸工場を立上げ、いわゆるアメリカン・ドリームを実現させました。そして父親が他界した後、形見として糸がロズに贈られました。1970年代に私はツーソンに6年間ほど住んでいて彼女と出会い親しくなりました。以来彼女は私の作品への良き助言者でもあります。以前から私は糸を作品に取り入れたいと模索していましたが、それを知ったロズが、形見の糸を私に贈ってくれました。長い年月を経ても褪せない糸の光沢、色とりどりの美しい糸に私の創作意欲は刺激され膨らみました。

　2014年春ニューヨークのアゴラ画廊での展覧会に、これらの糸を取り入れた作品を出品しました。アゴラ画廊はハドソン河沿いのチェルシー地区に位置します。このハドソン河をへだてたちょうど向かい側沿岸に、偶然にも昔ロズの父親の製糸工場があったことを知りました。百年の歳月を経て、糸はアート作品となり里帰りしたと言えるかもしれません。

　私にとってこれらの糸との出会いは、新しいアートの可能性にチャレンジするまたとないチャンスの到来です。こうして生れたのが、糸、アクリル絵具、木片を使ったこれらミックスド・メディアの作品です。

Thread Story

My works are created with threads, acrylic paints, and wood pieces. I started using threads in my work about three years ago. As I have always been attracted by beauty of textiles, I feel this is a natural direction for me to take.

Several years ago my friend Roz gave me a variety of colorful threads. Then I found out these beautiful threads had an interesting history behind.
Roz is an artist and is living in Tucson, Arizona at present. Her father immigrated to America from Hungary at the beginning of 20th century. He founded a thread卜anufacturing company in New York and achieved his American dream
After he passed away, Roz received some of his threads as mementoes.
In the 1970s I lived in Tucson for six years and met her and become good friends. Ever since, she has been a great advisor for my art as well.
When Roz found out I was trying and experimenting ways to incorporate threads in my work, she sent me her father's threads as a gift. The threads were beautiful and brilliant in color even after many years. I was so inspired and excited by them and got a full of new ideas to explore
In Spring, 2014 I had an opportunity to exhibit at Agora Gallery in New York, I showed my new thread works. The gallery is located in Chelsea district along the Hudson River. Roz told me her father's factory happened to be also situated just across the river. I felt as though these threads returned home in form of art works after many years.

For most of my artist life I worked with oils and acrylic paints. Now, I have these beautiful threads and I feel this is a unique opportunity for me to challenge new creative possibilities of mixed media.
